World Breastfeeding Week 2026 at SMCRI
World Breastfeeding Week 2026 was celebrated at SMCRI by the Department of Paediatrics with great enthusiasm and active participation from the medical college and hospital community. The week-long programme brought together clinical and non-clinical staff, medical and nursing students, supporting staff, lactating mothers, and members of the general public, creating a vibrant platform for breastfeeding awareness and education.
The celebrations commenced on August 1, 2026, with the inauguration programme. Dr. Shalini M, Principal SMCRI, administered the breastfeeding pledge, while Dr. Paramesh S, Director SMCRI, distributed informative booklets highlighting the importance of breastfeeding and the significant role of family members in supporting breastfeeding mothers. An information booth was also inaugurated by a lactating mother and her newborn to address common doubts and myths related to breastfeeding.
An awareness session was conducted by Dr. Manasa Divakar from the Department of Community Medicine, an Advanced Certified Lactation Professional, for pregnant and lactating women. A quiz competition for nursing staff further encouraged learning and participation.
The week also featured poster-making, rangoli, clay-modelling, and short-reel competitions. These creative activities enabled students and staff to communicate important breastfeeding messages in engaging and accessible ways. Health talks for nursing students focused on the benefits of breastfeeding and addressing prevailing myths.
The celebrations culminated on August 7, 2026, with a guest lecture by Dr. Sahana Devadas, renowned neonatologist from BGS Medical College and Hospital, Bengaluru. Her valuable insights further enriched the programme. The event also included a beautiful painting depicting the sacred bond between Mother Yashoda and Lord Krishna, along with songs, dances, talks, and role-plays promoting breastfeeding. Prizes were distributed to the winners of the various competitions.
The programme successfully emphasized that breastfeeding awareness, education, and myth-busting should extend beyond a single week and continue throughout the year.
